SiGMA Rome is two weeks away, one of the last big conferences of the year for many people here. Over the past few seasons we have noticed that affiliates come to these events with very different goals, and the trip pays off in very different ways depending on the goal.
Roughly, we see three kinds of trips.
Finding new programs. Many short meetings, comparing terms, collecting contacts. Works well when you have a specific GEO or source that needs a new home, and gets harder when the search is open-ended.
Meeting programs you already work with. Fewer meetings, longer ones. Volumes, next year’s rates and new GEOs get discussed with people who already know your numbers. From the program side, these meetings often lead to concrete changes faster than first meetings do.
Reading the market. Walking the floor, side events, hearing what others are testing, which GEOs are getting crowded and which sources are growing. It rarely ends in a deal on the spot, and it shapes plans for the first half of next year.
Most people mix all three, though usually one of them decides whether the trip felt worth it.
For those going to Rome: which one is yours this year? And for those staying home: what made you skip it this time?
