September 2022 Core Update

What's up everybody, Google released their Sept 2022 core update. How is everyone doing so far? Any big fluctuations to report?

Nothing that I've seen, from either the HCU or the Core Update that seems to have been released a lot earlier than previous years. We shall see within 2 weeks when it completes. In the comment sections of sites like seroundtable, people always complain about huge drops, but I think that's always the case

What I can see in Semrush on all the sites I follow, ALL of them have dropped quite significantly. Not a single site out of those 10 have increased. The drop has been quite big for all of them. Either this update was targeted at affiliate/gambling sites or something else is going on?

lost some keywords.. mainly to new sites lol.. however my ftd's are still on same, so im thinking perhaps short tail and long tails wap.. last 3 days its been bouncing

Same here. Dramatic drop first overall, now bouncing. Have to wait until the update rolls out completely to make any conclusions.

Two sites which I had just finished a couple of days before this started have likely missed most of the scoring before they started rolling this out so not expecting big things now. Will probably have to wait for the next core update to see anything positive

I noticed some rankings dropping a bit - but number of clicks on thouse terms are now bigger than before.

I think it's kind of fun that a good position not always means the best position.

I belive Mr G is adjusting positions and valuating the conversions for best possible way of all sites on lets say top-5 results on some kw's.

I do not stress about this update, if someone got a hit - dont panic and do massive changes but rather wait a cople of weeks to see what happens

A while ago there was a guy who claimed to be a Google whistleblower and was visiting the comment sections of seroundtable. He claimed that during these updates, the 'filters' Google applies to the search are OFF, and that's why many sites see positive or negative effects. When the update concludes those are brought back ON and things shift.

How much of it was true, and how much he was a real whistleblower nobody can say, but this is what he preached for a few months, before disappeared.

so i lost a lot of long tail, though ftds seem to be the same so perhaps it was empty traffic i lost. i noticed a old site i ave not touched in 2 years got a 4000% increase wtf? so the better sites took a dip and my low quality site got rewarded..

tbf he spoke a lot of nonsense and google quickly said he had nothing to do with them. i seem to recall one bit of advice what to stop letting google crawl your site which would be insane

I mean no agency or a company would ever say "Yeah that person is/was part of our organization", but yeah I do remember some of his advices and that one in particular, or "stop using any Google service, so they wont track you".

Overall I don't expect a company that's on the market for PROFIT, to cater other people's businesses aka us, especially when they hold a monopoly and there are no consequences even if some mistreatment has been done.

I also can't imagine a better SE, where ads are not the main source of revenue, so I can't really picture anything changing.

saw something very similar. Very wierd. Google's May Core Update seemed to reward good sites but this update appears counter productive so far.

Another update was just released: September 20th - Released the September 2022 product reviews update. This update applies to English-language product reviews. The rollout could take 2 weeks to complete.

Looking at this latest update, it almost appears as a crackdown on gambling sites. Many big sites have tanked by a large amount. It's almost ridiculous how much it has affected the positions and traffic.
