I don't ponder on rankings too much - I use the Search Traffic in Google Webmaster Tools for indicators on how my site is ranking, its very easy to get caught up in constant rank checking. As your site grows and keywords become more it can cause more time-out from building your site.

My 2 cents, just keep it simple, focus on growing your site and content in the first 6 - months to a year. As with any type of business, online or offline, create value and the money will come later. Ranking's are an essential KPI to any website or campaign, so it would be ignorant not to keep a track of this and see the progression of your website up the SERPs. I tend to just check on occasion now and just check my organic search traffic, if it's going up then I know that because my ranking's are increasing :)

AWR is good although its not free. I use something called Fat rank, its a chrome plugin and allows you to specific by country and location. Really good for adhoc checks, not so much reporting

Yeah, it's a bit more expensive than many other tools but io it's worth it. I think you can try it for free for 30 days.

In my opinion no ranking checker tool is worth the cost unless you're doing it for clients and for personal use - if you've got a large range of sites that you need to consistently monitor. Ranking checkers usually tend to distract site owners of what they should be focussing their time on, essentially building a brand and valuable content. Ranking's come with time, especially in this industry!

Manually checking your serps can be misleading because you'll get cookies which place the sites you frequent in higher positions in search engines

To avoid such cases of personalized search results I always manually check positions using the private browsing (shortcut key: Ctrl+Shift+P or Ctrl+Shift+N).

Since GWT now adds Analytics data it can be very useful to view them in there. They can be delayed and slightly inaccurate but would rather use GWT than pay a fortune for a metric which may be wrong on a third party platform, which will change depending on location.

For anyone who likes playing with features and reading stats, check out SlimStat (WP plugin) installed it last week and gives you Real Time (very detailed) stats right to your dashboard

Scrap what I said before - I've been using Authority Labs and I love it, daily ranking updates vs. search volumes over three major search engines. It does get a little pricey if you have a large site but competes very well with Moz on pricing but blows ranking checker out the water.

I use TrafficTravis the free version, also the old v3 version as the new v4 is pretty cloggy. That's about it, it does whatever every paid program does, it also has a paid version, but I don't bother. The new WMT Analytics though, despite its lagging indicator, it really helps you discover new rising keywords.

Both Authority Labs and AED were costly, compared to Pro Rank Tracker.

I literally stopped checking my ranking's about a week ago, I was driving myself mad and not really getting any work done. Probably the biggest distraction I've come across, since that my productivity has improved and I just check analytics to see what the impact is on traffic

Normally I check with Google Search data center which is most easiest one but I also check with Rank Tracker too.

I was thinking of getting a SERP tracker. I have been using CuteRank (free version), but was thinking of trying something better.

What is the best tool out there for this? I want something that will help me track progress of keywords that I can get trends from at the very least.

I used Webposition for a long time but it is expensive for what is offered, the reports are stupid - you can not zoom in on a timeline or change it, there are no alerts, etc. and there are never any new features. we would not suggest it. SemRush now has recently introduced rank tracking, so perhaps we will use that once we have evaluated it as we do already pay for SemRush. But it is a new offering, so may not have the depth of features a stand alone ranker will offer.
