This poll will determine if I change the colors of the header section. It will be a VERY simple poll. If it is overwhelming that the colors are too garish, then I will make a change ;) Gotta please the masses.

When I first saw the coloured boxes I didn't like them at all.
But I'm cool with them now. At least there's now confusing which website you're on!
(I voted they're OK)

But what does bug me is those "New Post" buttons encroaching on part of the header. :(

Yeah, that's your resolution. I'm going to have to figure out a way to make a change for 1024 and even 1280 resolutions. :( 1024 is difficult because that means a major change to the header. 1280 isn't so bad, really, but has to change. This may take a little more time, but will be fixed.

I'm not a coding expert (as anyone who has visited my websites will testify!), but can't you just make the left margin a bit wider to cure this problem?

As the buttons are now static anyway (they used to "float") - what is the point of having them at the side?
Just stick them somewhere within the header!

I'm thinking 'wider' is not going to help. The point of having them to the side is for easy visibility. People always wonder where the New Post button is - it's easier to see there :)

My point was, if you make the margin wider the buttons then wont encroach on the pane to the right.

I've just spotted another "pain in the ass" error too; when I minimise my window to view at about 90% of full width (which I often do because I have reminders down the right of my screen), the width of the forum stays the same. i.e. I lose the right-hand end of the posts from my window!

I have given it a few days and the colours don't bother me at all. The main thing that does though is the weird spacing and irregular sizing and alignment of text, making the whole thing not very pleasant to read. What I would do is this:

1. Try to prevent affiliate program names wrapping in the recent payments box (right now "Affiliate Edge (CWC Affiliates)" is wrapping). Change the "payment date" heading to just "date" and "payment method" to "method" and reduce those column widths. Stick a "white-space: nowrap" CSS in the cells of the first column if you have to. (and now i just realised you've got some weird concoction of list elements formatted to look like a table instead of just using a table for what is tabular data, so it might not be that easy).

2. The text size of the column headings is bigger in the payments box than the forums box. Make them the same.

3. Doing both 1 & 2 will help making sure the lines of text in the payment calendar box line up horizontally with the forums box to the right, and are all single line (i.e. make sure they have the same line-height and font-size settings). This will make the whole thing more aesthetically pleasing and easier to read and scan. Its about having what is called a "vertical rhythm" to your text. See here for more info: Add and delete vertical space in measured intervals | The Elements of Typographic Style Applied to the Web

4. Put a bit more padding in the boxes so that the text isn't so close to the left and right edges of each box. A bit of white-space makes things way more readable.

5. Again try to vertically align the text in the bottom 3 boxes with each other. If you want some boxes with bigger text thats ok, just make sure they all site on the same horizontal lines (i.e. same line-height setting, or the boxes with two lines could have exactly double the line height of the box with 4 lines).

6. I dunno if this is the new windows style that you're trying to copy, but it seems odd to me to have the box titles at the bottom of each box. Move them back up to the top of each box next to the icon you have in each one. You could move "enter your recent payments" link to the bottom of that box if it gets in the way.

It shouldn't wrap at all :( I'll have that fixed. Good idea with shortening column widths. Yes, it's easy to do. I know it's a list (which is more common than table elements now), but it will work.

Will read. Good points.

ok, will try to do that. might be hard on the forum posts panel.

ok, makes sense. I will likely change the sponsor box to have 1 sponsor at a time (logo) and rotate every few seconds anyway - that will eliminate that box.

Yes, it is windows panels. I may not change that. I'll think about it, though :) And I will mock it up to see if it makes sense that way. It will really mess up the layout, I'm sure of it.

There's nothing wrong with using a table in this case. Its not a good idea for laying out a page but its fine when the data you are showing is meant to be tabular.

Very true. I am still looking into changes, haven't made a decision yet.
