Italy ranked fifth in Europe’s gambling market in 2024, recording over $13 billion in turnover. Casinos contributed $8.3 billion, lotteries brought in $3 billion, and sports betting added $1.8 billion, despite the country having only six land-based casinos. The market’s growth, in line with a 4.8% global increase, was largely driven by the rise of online casinos and sports betting. In 2025, Italy’s regulator issued 46 new online gambling licenses, raising the fee to €7 million per brand per vertical from €200,000. This sharp increase is expected to trigger industry consolidation, leaving about 30 to 35 operators in the highly competitive market.
