India has introduced new regulations to oversee its growing online gaming sector. Effective May 1, 2026, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming (PROG) Act 2025 aims to distinguish between permissible games like e-sports and social games, and banned online money games. A central Online Gaming Authority (OGAI) will regulate the sector, ensuring user safety with measures like age verification, in-app reporting, and grievance systems. The Act also criminalizes real-money gambling and enforces strict penalties. The move follows concerns over financial losses from unregulated online gambling and aims to create a safer, more controlled gaming environment.
