Up to now i've been doing mostly media buys and PPC but am thinking about creating some sites of my own. How many pages do you need to have to compete these days? I know there's no "magic number" but since i'd be the one doing all the content i'm just wondering if it's something i should even bother doing if there's no way i could compete. All help is appreciated :)

Number of page is not important. The important is "quality" of pages.
If you have a site with few pages but with good quality, you will receive more visits than a site with millions of SPAMMY pages.
And remember Google Panda...

I had on my site some "poor quality" pages (small text content, no informations usefull for users etc...) and I lost a lots of visits... I'm rebuilding all! ;)

Thanks for the feedback dfiocch! I've heard nightmare stories about Panda. Do i need to worry about publishing relevant articles from other sources (giving full credit of course)? Or will google penalize me for having duplicate content?

You're welcome!
Yes, Panda is terrible... For now, I don't think that republish articles from other sources is a good idea, even if with credits reports. I have heard that a lot of "republisher" sites were totally destroyed by Panda! Uhm... We need to wait in order to fully understand this new Google algorithm.

Yeah, sounds like you're right about that... I'm even concerned about writing reviews...the content is original but there's only so many ways you can talk about the same thing over and over. It's original in that i wrote it but will google see it that way...that's the big question i guess!

Whilst losing serps is always a PITA the Panda update is not all bad. Quanity without quality is the enemy these days. If you can write to your intended niche audience in a natural, fluid style without keyword stuffing, I'm sure even if you have only minimal pages start these will climb in rankings.

The Panda update is a good time for all affiliates to take a constructive appreasal of their sites. Be on the look-out for content written for SE bot and if you find that, re-write that content.

Fresh, well written content, Google likes that a lot ;D

PS Also take care with where and whom you trade links. Again Quality will out rank quantity.

and I thought I was the only one thinking the same thing! lol :p

Least with casinos it has sub niches so you can always find something to talk about whilst keeping it within the vertical. However try doing bingo content. Did an seo job for a bingo site. Seriously by the time I finished my brain was like jello and took me a week to get the word "bingo" out of my head. ;D
