How did you get started in the business (Freelance Gaming Writer)?
Originally, I proposed to a magazine editor (and friend) that along with his books and movie reviews, he should review video games in his publication, he asked me to write the articles as well! It started off with some PS3, PC and Wii console game reviews, and after doing that for a few years (I still do), I discovered online gambling, and met another client who was interested in my work. I eventually wound up doing that too, which was a wholly different experience, but equally as fun; and has now become the dominant part of my work.
What is your expertise?
I've been working in the online gambling sector of the gaming market for over six years now. Mostly, my time is occupied with trying out the latest slot machine games and table games, Casino games, Bingo games, reviewing and writing about them. In my spare time, I still play lots of console (and computer) games, and similarly play and review those for other magazines and clients too. I have been playing games since I was a child, and have been reviewing them in some form since 2006.
Can you describe to me your current work week in terms of freelance writing?
Generally, most of my working week is devoted to the online gambling sector. My working week begins with a run-down of all the assignments that are due (with the earliest deadlines taking preference over other assignments), and I begin putting digital pen to an equally digital page. Researching and playing games is a key part of my work, though it is not mostly done during the working week, and instead most of my free time is devoted to this activity, which I see as a form of leisure. This way, the best part of my working week is reserved for getting the material out to clients.
How many hours do you devote to it a week and how many projects do you juggle at one time?
Typically, I work most of the week in the online gambling arena. My other projects tend to be monthly or fortnightly assignments, so they have longer deadlines and often involve far less promotional work, and much more reviews. My gambling work keeps me grounded to the computer for anywhere up to 8 hours per day, but being a freelance writer, my schedule is of course flexible depending on what work is required and when it is due.
How are you different from other gaming writers?
For one thing, I am not a writer who was handed a gaming assignment and got stuck with it. I have lived and breathed games since I was a child. My childhood occurred around about the same time as the first true consoles appeared, such as the SNES and Master System. Since those days, I have owned virtually every console, and played almost all of the big releases. Gaming is a passion for me, which isn't always the case with other writers, who are merely "lumbered" with the subject.
Furthermore, as a die-hard gamer myself, I am fully aware of what other fans want, what is hot and what is not. I can also talk about the history or "evolution" as I like to call it, of a specific franchise, brand or set of games. This also applies to the online gambling world. I wouldn't be a very good online gambling game reviewer, if I didn't dabble in online gambling from time to time, playing demo after demo of free slot and table games, as well as the odd real-money game. There aren’t too many professions where your hobby is also your job, and I can proudly say that mine is one of them.
What are the subjects you are willing to do in future?
Although gaming is my passion, there are other genres of writing which I am fully versed in. Football is also one of my primary passions, and a subject about which I am fully knowledgeable. Football aside, other sports also occupy my mind, and I am pretty well versed in those too. I have in the past written about current news events, opinionated articles and blogs about a whole variety of real world issues.
Generally, I am ready and willing to have a crack at anything, although my preference and expertise is best reserved for current events, sports writing, entertainment, technology and of course, video games of every genre, style, platform and format.
