Canada’s investment regulator has tightened its rules for prediction markets, explicitly banning sports and entertainment event contracts from regulated investment platforms. The Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) also requires brokers to hide prohibited markets rather than simply prevent users from trading them. Approved contracts remain limited mainly to financial, economic and environmental events, with conditions including a minimum 30-day resolution period and no leverage. Interactive Brokers Canada and Wealthsimple are currently the only firms approved to offer event contracts in the country. Regulators say they will continue monitoring the sector as prediction markets attract growing attention in Canada.
