I recently swapped my main site to https. 301'd the http and www versions, new sitemap, changed GA and WMT to https, changed canonical to https, even pinged a few main pages.

5 days later, SERPS still showing http:// domain . How long should I expect the process of search engines changing my site results over to https?

Mine took a few weeks before most of the URLs were updated in the serps.

Did you submit the new URL and tell Google to crawl all of the linked URLs? Maybe that will speed up the process.

I'm not sure where you're referring to for submitting the new URL. But I have submitted a new sitemap (a few of them actually, our site auto-updates the sitemap every 12 hours and submits if there are changes). I have also gone into the https version of Search Console and used "Fetch as Google" tool to fetch and request indexing of said page and all linked pages.

You'll also need to correctly set up your htaccess (root) file with a few instructions, along with adding a htaccess file in your images folder etc.

Without these you risk dup content, along with the Yellow Padlock of Peril or the grey Exclamation Mark (aka mixed content secure/not secure).

I'm about to hit bed, so I'll post that data later today.

With regard to http > https, Google identifies both of these are different sites per se.

So if you haven't done so already, you'll need to the add the https version of your site to GWMT ;)

Actually, htaccess isn't an option for us. Our hosting ignores the htaccess file. I used php to set up our sitewide redirect as they instructed:

There are, unfortunately, a few (thousand) hard-coded internal links on the site. Those are being removed from existence as I speak. Virtually every page is padlocked though and all external links are resolving to https:// due to the php redirect. Where it's not working currently is on paginated pages, but we're fixing those too since we're swapping all links to relative.

It took a little over a week for us to start seeing updated URLs indexed. In Wordpress, there is a plugin that
will automatically change over the http:// links in the theme and plugins, so that you don't have to dig into
everything and find all of the http:// URLs for your web site and change them over to the https:// version.

I just pulled my database, used Dreamweaver and did a find/replace. Took all of 15 sec.
I avoid using too many plugins, currently at 11 - for me, that's too high.

Each plugin adds a little more loading overhead, not to mention the risk of (possible) vulnerabilities.

However, if a person is not skilled in those tasks, then a plugin is the only option.

NB - if links are hard-coded, then the plugin wont help. You'll need to do what I did (hopefully you've got Dreamweaver or similar).

We're using Drupal 7, and while this site was our first, it was not one we set up. We do use WP on other sites, but my knowledge of Drupal is even less as it's been administrated by another person for a decade. If it was that easy for you to do though, I think I should spend a little time today seeing if such a thing is possible!

Turns out we had a similar situation. We're still getting some hits on the old http and wwws, but I'd say that probably 85% has now been swapped over to https results in Google searches.

Kinda a bummer that our Search Console data is now split between the https and http versions... makes comparing pre-post https swap data a bit of a pain in the ass :(

I got my first impression in Search Console just 24h after I swapped to https and a FANTASTIC BUMP IN TRAFFIC! I cant post links (screenshot) but after 15 days we've increased with 100% impressions from

My website is really new so maybe Mr.G is putting some extra time to crawl it and puts its pieces, links and words together.

Don't forget to add all versions of your website in Search Console, even if you are telling to display only 1:
  • http ://
  • http ://www.
  • http s://
  • http s://www.

From my own expirience: index page ~ 3 days. All sites may be several weeks.

Not everyone uses Wordpress!!

Also, it took Google 2-3 weeks, but they transferred over almost everything to https and what wasn't showing up as https is slowly being converted in the SERPS as Google continues to crawl our website.

Exactly. I agree with you.
