2026 World Cup Sets New US Sports Betting Records
The 2026 FIFA World Cup established new benchmarks for soccer betting in the United States, with several major sportsbooks reporting their strongest results ever for the sport. The tournament’s final between Spain and Argentina produced record wagering figures after Spain secured a 1-0 victory in extra time on July 19.
Operators credited the tournament’s success to growing interest in soccer betting, a wider range of available markets and the competition taking place across North America. The event delivered record activity throughout the tournament and continued the expansion of soccer as a major category in the US market.
Spain-Argentina final becomes sportsbooks’ biggest soccer event
The championship match generated unprecedented numbers for multiple betting operators. DraftKings reported approximately 2 million wagers placed on the Spain-Argentina final, making it the company’s most-bet soccer match to date.
Caesars Sportsbook also recorded its strongest soccer performance during the final. The operator said the betting handle for the match was nearly 65% higher than its previous single-game soccer record and reached 4.4 times its previous tournament high.
“The World Cup Final delivered the biggest soccer betting event in Caesars Sportsbook history,” the operator’s trading team said in a statement. “Interest was off the charts before kickoff, with pre-match wagering already surpassing our previous tournament record.”
BetMGM identified the final as its largest soccer event based on both ticket volume and total handle. Christian Cipollini, Senior Trading Manager at BetMGM, highlighted the impact of the tournament’s closing match.
“The 2026 World Cup was record-breaking at BetMGM on many fronts, including the Spain-Argentina Final being the most-bet (tickets and handle) soccer match ever in company history,” BetMGM Senior Trading Manager Christian Cipollini said.
The final also surpassed betting activity recorded for several major American sporting events. The match attracted more wagers than selected events from the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Final, March Madness and the 2025 World Series.
Tournament-wide betting activity reaches new levels
The strong results continued beyond the final, with sportsbooks reporting significant increases compared with previous international soccer tournaments.
Caesars said the 2026 World Cup produced 30% more bets than the combined total from the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments. The operator also reported that World Cup betting handle slightly exceeded March Madness figures.
DraftKings recorded a major increase compared with the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, reporting 650% more bets during the 2026 tournament. BetMGM also saw substantial growth, with betting activity increasing by 211% compared with the previous World Cup.
Hard Rock Bet Senior Vice President of sportsbook Neil Walsh described the scale of the event’s performance.
“This World Cup will go down as the biggest betting event in American history — we’re talking the equivalent of ten Super Bowls,” Walsh said. “A sport we were once told Americans would not embrace turned into one for the history books. The whole country wanted in.”
The tournament also generated strong interest in individual teams and players. DraftKings reported that the US national team became its most-bet team during the competition, while Lionel Messi was the platform’s most-bet player during Argentina’s campaign.
Player-focused betting markets also attracted significant attention. BetMGM reported that Kylian Mbappé represented its largest player liability, while FanDuel identified him as its most selected goalscorer option.
Operators expect continued growth after record tournament
Sportsbooks pointed to the tournament’s North American location as one factor behind the strong betting results. Caesars said customers showed higher-than-expected participation across futures markets, event-specific wagers and Same Game Parlay offerings.
“There was some uncertainty around the impact of an extended tournament format, but World Cup fever took hold following the USMNT’s promising start, and that enthusiasm continued throughout the knockout stages and into the final.”
DraftKings also reported increased engagement among Spanish-speaking customers during the tournament. The operator recorded a 250% rise in active Spanish-language soccer customers after introducing Spanish-language functionality in 2025.
Following Spain’s title win, sportsbooks have already started offering early betting markets for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. DraftKings and bet365 listed Spain as the early favorite after the national team claimed the 2026 championship.
The latest figures underline the growing importance of soccer betting within the US market, with the 2026 World Cup setting new records across major sportsbook platforms.
