YouTube taking down Gambling Related Channels

Specifically those channels that show real play game content, invariably slots related. Not just those that stream live, but those which record their game play and upload to their channel.

I speak with the owner of Dunover Slots who last Friday saw his channel with over 800 videos get removed. What is even worse, he has no copies of any of the videos which he uploaded. Hundreds of hours of work down the drain.

Does this mean that YouTube will be going after all Gambling related channels, such as APCW and the like as well? Several years back APCW if I recall correctly got suspended.

Certainly it is grey area as far as real game play videos are concerned. Many believe it feeds problem gambling ( as the comments on my video with Dunover on YouTube demonstrate ). Or is it a case of problem gamblers and concerned parents specifically searching out these channels and thus making a concerted effort to get them removed?

I felt his pain a couple yrs ago when they took ours down. It was a tough lesson to learn! We had to move over to Wisita so we can own our own videos. So much worth the cost, I am shocked his lasted as long as it did, I really liked his channel. I think one of our competitors complained about ours and had it taken down to be honest.

I guess you could say Dunover was done over by Youtube.

Jokes aside -- this definitely sucks for him, but this is the risk you take when you put your content on someone else's platform. Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Reddit, player/affiliate forums, or wherever -- it's out of your control and could be gone at any time.

He should have backed up the videos, and he should have been posting them on his own domain at the same time, in case something like this happened.

I can't believe anyone would not keep copies - I would never rely solely on "cloud storage" (or whatever you call it).

My YouTube channel is still up - though I do not do any sort of blatant advertising of casinos or my sites on there.

Thankfully it transpires that Nicola over on CM has downloaded and kept most of Dunover's videos. But yeah KK, I keep each and every video I upload locally on one of my storage devices. I think the problem is showcasing the playing of slots for real money and also littering the video description with affiliate links. Gambling is a grey area already and the likes of YouTube frown on Paid Promotion. If your video is in essence an advertorial you have to declare it as such prior to publishing it.

This and the fact there is a an ever growing group of individuals that want to see all gambling related content removed from the likes of YouTube and Vimeo and other video hosting platforms.

It's always a risk to put everything on a third party platform like YouTube, Twitter, Fakebook, Instagram, etc.

Gambling sentiments are negative already. All those aggressive channels with spammy descriptions, clickbait titles and people playing not with their own money are not making that any better.

I am not talking about a specific channel but in general.

Yep, spot on there. Whenever I am asked what I do for a living, I say 'affiliate marketing'. When pushed, I say I create websites.

Why don't you say gambling? as really what we do is send people to where they want to go, at the end of the day players search for us, we just provide the options on where they can go. If you smoke and someone asks you for a cig and you give them, is that wrong?

It has a very negative image. Sometimes it simply doesn't help when opening a bank account, in a social network, etc. Many people do not get the difference between a gambler, someone offering games of chance and an affiliate.

I've explained some people up to 10 times what I am doing, but they still think I am running a casino or playing poker.

Yep, telling the parents of my children's friends what I actually market online for a living is not exactly a smart move on first introductions. Case in point.

Especially when a person spends time and effort to create something new, some useful content for a certain group of people who able to appreaciate. Really sad.

Also, in some communities, you might attract the faster attention of banks, tax departments, governments, etc. Even if you're doing absolutely nothing illegal.

Or people think you're having large amounts of cash at home.

I prefer low-profile.

Don't use affiliate links or have game session videos playing slots. Alternative to that is use a site like Twitch or pay for a service like Wistia as mentioned by Bonustreak

Given the reaction in the tabloids about online gambling affiliates and links - and affiliate subtle efforts to encourage gambling - I am not surprised that YouTube and Google took this step - after all they are the biggest affiliate systems of all.

At present it's difficult to get programs in the UK to approve honest opinions and previews of their program, as they are all afraid of statements being declared either untrue or coercion to gamble and being slapped by advertising standards board and being fined thousands of pounds.

So hosting direct online play is always going to be tricky and hosting of this sort of material will have to devolve to smaller niche sites that don't rely on affiliate income at all and are clear of any association.
