The Australian Government has introduced the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Bill 2023, aimed at banning credit card payments and related financial products for online gambling. Companies failing to comply with the new law may face fines of up to $234,750, as part of ongoing efforts to address problem gambling and enhance consumer protection, including measures such as monthly activity statements, staff training, and a National Self-Exclusion Register.

I mentioned this with an Aussie-clued up aff contact. His reply, "They can buy Neosurf with credit cards".

Good point. Doesn't help with withdrawals, of course.

If someone has a gambling issue, they can go to the bank and obtain a cash withdrawal from their CC. They can also use an ATM to do the same. All this dumb law does is prevent those without an addiction, the freedom to do with their own money, what they choose to do.

Fact is Online Gambling isn't the problem!!!

I can stand at my front gate, and literally walk 5 min in any direction, and be sitting in front of a pokie machine (which btw they now accept $5, 10, 20, 50 and $100 bills) with a cold beer.

Most of these places are opening at 7am, and some don't close till 5am. 2 hours closed to do daily cash consolidation, clean the place and open the doors again.

We were at the pub for a meal a few weeks back.
Ate and then thought we'd drop a few bucks in the pokies.

I don't care what anyone says, there's a distinct difference in body language/persona between a person playing pokies for entertainment, and those who are playing because they have a gambling addiction.

Until someone in Gov., grows a pair and wont be dictated to by the Hoteliers Association (they lobby for these pokie venues), the gambling problem will continue to be, well, a problem.

Fact, no matter what is done, other than ban all forms of gambling online and land based, there will always a small % of folks who become addicted to gambling. Nothing will change/stop this other than a total blanket ban. But the Gov., wont do this because it rakes in a crap load of TAX!
