Illinois lawmakers have approved a $55.2 billion state budget that includes a new per-bet tax on sports wagering. Effective July 1, sportsbooks will pay 25 cents per wager for the first 20 million bets annually, and 50 cents per bet thereafter. This move aims to generate over $40 million in revenue. The Sports Betting Alliance criticized the tax as discriminatory and potentially harmful to the legal market. Additionally, the budget raises taxes on tobacco products and imposes new corporate income taxes on businesses moving profits offshore. Governor J.B. Pritzker is expected to sign the budget into law.
