This is really not about SEO. But I didn't know where else to post this rant.

Yesterday I learned that google maps api is no longer free.

Without any notice at all google cuts off their maps API.

I have spent more time than I care to think about building stuff on the google maps API... Now all that work goes down the drain unless I cough up some heavy cash to google.

Now don't get me wrong I don't mind anyone charging for their services, like proving the maps API.

But what really makes me mad is that google never said anything about charging for the access to the API. Then after years of people building stuff based on the maps API, they cut off the API without notice. This is pure and simple blackmail by google. PAY US OR ALL YOUR TIME AND WORK WAS WASTED!!

This kind of behavior I expect from some rogue online casinos, not from the company who's motto used to be "Don't be Evil".

This shows me that google is acting just like some rogue casinos I could name. Google got so big and rich that they don't need the good will of webmasters anymore (remember how they used to dote on us).

I am really disappointed in Larry Page and Google.

I will be paying for the mapquest API, but google can stuff it, I refuse to pay them a penny after they acted like this.

If they would have given notice and let developers know that they were going to do this, I would not have a single complaint (except the price google is charging for the API.)

I am also pulling all the google crap off my sites before they decide to just cut off something else without notice and then want to charge you to get access to it again.

******

Oh ya... are you all aware that in the US whenever you use ggoogle search you are now geo location tracked to your exact location along with tracking your search queries.

You can not opt out of this geo location.

So google now knows who you are, cuz they track your location and they know what your thinking because they track what you search for...

I don't think people understand what kind of information this gives google about them.

If your searching for cold medicine.. google knows YOU or someone close to you has a cold. If you search for Guy Fawkes maybe your planing on blowing up congress...

Sorry for the long rant. But I am really angry about this.

They've {The Unseen Powers That Be aka:NWO Groupies} been planning this for years now brother and have already been doing it for quite a few years now. The underground and networks are on top of this tho and are trying to get the word out by helping to educate the lost ones {CODE}, I don't have to tell you that tho, I'm sure; but for all the other sheeple out there...{TIME TO WAKE THE PH**K UP PEOPLE! NO KIDDING} ;)

I put a notice up on my directory.

Note: We no longer recommend Google© search.
Google© has decided to track all users activity and locations and will not allow people to opt-out of being tracked.
We believe that this unauthorized tracking of people's activities and locations violates the privacy of Americans and we at Lots0cash will not be a part of it.

I also closed all my google accounts.

In the past I have refrained from BH SEO, or even grey hat for fear of google slapping me. But at this point I really don't give a *&%# what google wants or thinks.

Google are slowly driving out all the mom and pop websites in favor of the big cooperate branded sites... after all it's all about user experience
(actually it's about google making more money and being more in control of whats on the www)

My old friend Aaron Wall made a video that I think everyone will find entertaining and oh so true....

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GD1Gsw2LOYE?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GD1Gsw2LOYE?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

Exactly, my retail sites are being crushed by the walmart, target, dollar store ads now appearing for my top keywords. I used to dominate that space.

Between the polititians, these gambling programs and Google in bed I'm heading for the soup line, or a job anyways.

I think this is pretty ridiculous on Google's part. Does Google really expect every single person with a website to become a brand? Or a company? lol Google used to be so much better in the past, and it didn't used to discriminate this much. The top results should belong to the most relevant websites, not websites that are only brands or companies.

Google now measures SERP relevancy by their adwords profit margin.

No I don't think google expects mom and pop websites to brand, I think the writing on the wall says that google is just going to slowly push out all the smaller sites in favor of the big (already Branded) sites.

Eric Shmidt, Xbig man at google, let the 'cat out of the bag' regarding google's obvious movement toward the big brands. He said and I quote, "Brands are how we sort out the cesspool...", he said this about 7 months ago. He has sense backed off from that statement, because of the feedback they were getting from small website owners... But he made it perdy obvious that big brands are 'trusted' more now than ever before by google.

So IMO it is just a matter of time till people (fondly?) remember all the diversity on the WWW.

Like the Guru said... I feel your pain.
My non-gambling sites have been getting torched by google... while their content is scraped and wrapped in adwords and out ranking my sites... It is a hard pill to take.

They have also become sloppy and lazy. I have reported at least 4 scrapper websites, and all I got was "at this time Google does not fell that this website needs to be removed from the serps.

If you are concerned about your searching privacy use scroogle dot org. In fact use the ssl version as well.

About Google's Ads here's what CEOs had to say when they just started Google:

It's hard not to comment on this coming from the days before google when you had to try everything to get noticed 'in the cesspool' that didn't even know it was a cesspool yet - before lycos, altavista, et al became subordinate.

When yahoo was giving info to the prc people said, "goog would never do that" and a few of said, they won't need to they will own the internet and the people's republic will kneel at their feet. A few of us said, they are men of integrity but they will sell out some day. And then came the neener toothpick toothpick and everything went to shit the world over. It's a long slow burn.

Old fux like us know that the internet and the www are not the same thing and we see the reach of the founders of the net. I'm so freaking old I have (somewhere) a correspondence with SIR tim berners lee or what ever his name is now. (founder of the www) His eloquent reply to my well formed inquiry was, "what?".

So there ya have it.

Everything you have ever thought, said, or done on the INTERNET is directly attributable to you (with a little map(i) api enhancement for public safety.

Google is the devil folks, always has been.

The question becomes what is the alternative?

Sorry to double quote you, but I MIGHT HAVE MISSED YOUR GROK
You nailed it, really.

And that is the way it is. These guys who have had special privs on google can wave their big google seo d*cks in our face all day, tell us how it is going to work, tell us about their insides and insights and in the end we are ALL just a bunch of monkeys like we were at day 1.

Getting this (slightly) back on track, for a ridiculous number of years I have been telling anyone who'll listen that Google is the most evil site on the internet and that their "don't do evil" slogan is the definition of irony. I've bored people to tears about it and noone gives a shit. Why should they, I guess? If I was someone else and I worked outside computing and only used Google (the only search engine in the world, I'd assume) to search for stuff then I'd probably be pretty happy with Google and I certainly wouldn't listen to some paranoid geek banging on about Google being bad when all I want to do is search for sports results and donkey porn.

Others would argue Facebook is worse. Either way, I´ve decided to ease off my animosity towards Google. What's that phrase about recognising what you can and can't change? It´s not healthy to hate a website :)

I don't "hate" google. I just can't bring myself to hate an algorithm...

But, I am not going to participate or join the crowd when it comes to google.

I too have been accsued of wearing a tin foil hat when it comes to google. But the facts are the facts... They are tracking people in more depth than has ever been possible before.

And I find that when people realize that what they search for is tagged directly to them and not anonymous... they do perk up and listen.

Most people search for things that they don't want anyone to know about... ;)
They expect the searches to be anonymous and are upset when they find they are not.

xecutable, you really hit the nail on the head. When big corporations can buy Tens of Millions of dollars worth of adwords a month they can dictate to google, just like google dictates to the webmasters... Do this, Don't do that...

Last year Walmart had a $580 Million Dollar a year advertising budget... A big chunk of that 580 Million went to google.
So how is a mom and pop going to compete with that... their not.

One more reason Google sucks

Last week google decided to encrypt referral data from logged in users.

This is huge move against small websites and organic SEO.

Along with, geo tracking that can't be turned off... Google is now showing it's long term goals of controlling all the financial transactions and advertising on the WWW.

Here is a video and story from webpro news... very interesting bad news for all of us...

Hey Lots0

My developer said that Maps for Google are only charging after 20,000 queries per month. Just saying... that's a lot. Seems like if anyone has to bite the bullet here its the bigger peeps. Mom-n-pop sites should be okay.

correct me if I'm wrong. Just passing the information.

25k impressions is nothing for an 'active' site.

and IMO $4 for 1000 is an outrageous amount of money to charge.

If you get 50k impressions a day it costs you $100.00 a day.

FYI - when speaking about mom and pop websites I am not talking about sites that don't get any traffic. I am talking about sites that are non-corporate, small business.

For my non-gambling site that used to use google maps gets 150k impressions a day... That would cost me $500 a DAY just to use google maps. The sites total profit is only sightly over this amount. So if I used google maps I would not make any profit at all.

Reasonable... I don't think so.
Invasive you bet they are... Do I still think google sucks... even more than before...

Funny side note: I do have to admit it is very funny to me how scared some people are of google.
