Betfred Suspends Ireland Operations Ahead Of New GRAI Licensing Regime

Betfred has confirmed it will temporarily suspend its online gambling services in Ireland at the end of June, ahead of the country’s transition to a new regulatory framework. The pause comes just before the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) begins enforcing a revised licensing system for remote betting operators on 1 July.

Customers have been informed that access to their Betfred accounts will end on 30 June. The operator has advised users to withdraw any remaining balances before the suspension takes effect and has also warned against placing bets that would settle after 29 June.

The company has described the decision as a temporary pause while it aligns its operations with the upcoming regulatory requirements in Ireland.

Temporary Market Exit Ahead Of Regulatory Overhaul

The suspension coincides with the introduction of Ireland’s Gambling Regulation Act 2024, which establishes a new licensing regime for online betting operators. From 1 July, companies offering remote gambling services in Ireland will be required to obtain authorisation from the GRAI, which will assume full responsibility for licensing and enforcement.

The new regulatory body is being granted expanded supervisory powers, including oversight of compliance, operator licensing, and enforcement actions where breaches occur. Financial penalties under the framework may reach up to €20 million or 10% of annual turnover, depending on which figure is higher.

Additional regulatory measures include enhanced consumer protection requirements, anti-money laundering controls, and the introduction of a national gambling self-exclusion register.

Customer Access And Account Restrictions

Betfred has confirmed that Irish customers will lose access to their accounts from 30 June. The operator has instructed users to withdraw available funds before the suspension period begins.

The company has also stated that it will provide further guidance regarding unsettled wagers, including long-term bets that extend beyond the operational pause. Customers with active positions are expected to receive additional communication outlining settlement procedures.

The suspension specifically affects online services, as Betfred does not operate retail betting shops in Ireland. Its Irish presence has been limited to digital sportsbook and casino offerings since its entry into the market in 2024.

Outside Ireland, Betfred remains a significant operator in the United Kingdom, where it runs more than 1,300 retail betting shops alongside its online sportsbook and casino platforms. The company also maintains operations in other international markets, including South Africa, following its exit from the United States betting sector in 2025.

The Irish pause comes at a time when operators active in the region are reassessing their compliance strategies in response to the new licensing regime. Market participants have been conducting operational reviews and preparing for the regulatory requirements introduced under the GRAI framework.

Industry Adjustment To New Irish Regulatory Structure

The introduction of the GRAI marks a structural shift in Ireland’s gambling oversight system, moving toward a centralised licensing and enforcement model. The regulator will oversee all aspects of remote gambling activity, including licensing approval, advertising compliance, and consumer protection standards.

Recent enforcement activity in the advertising sector has already signalled a stricter regulatory environment ahead of full implementation. Operators are expected to comply with more detailed obligations under the updated framework as it is rolled out.

Further stages of the Gambling Regulation Act are planned beyond July, including licensing for land-based gambling operators later in the year. Companies wishing to remain active in Ireland will need to complete the new authorisation process under GRAI supervision as the framework matures.
