Alberta Integrates IBIA Oversight Ahead of iGaming Launch
Alberta has formally approved the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) as a licensed integrity monitor in preparation for the province’s regulated online gambling launch, set for July 13, 2026. The decision enables the organization to oversee sportsbook operators entering Alberta’s emerging iGaming market and reinforces integrity monitoring as a central component of the regulatory framework.
The IBIA will collaborate closely with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) to identify and report suspicious betting activity associated with licensed operators. In a statement on the approval, the IBIA described Alberta’s approach as exemplary for regulated betting markets.
“This is a very good practice for how regulated betting markets should develop: with clear obligations for operators, trusted information sharing and practical systems in place to identify and escalate suspicious betting activity,” the organization said. “We are pleased to support Alberta as it opens its regulated market and to contribute to safeguarding sport and regulated sports betting in the province. Operators seeking an Alberta licence are encouraged to contact us to discuss how IBIA can support compliance and integrity objectives in the new market.”
Monitoring in Place From Day One
The province anticipates that around 30 online sportsbooks and casino operators will launch during the initial rollout, including major brands such as theScore Bet, FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers, and Betway. Both private operators and the government-run Play Alberta platform will compete within the market, highlighting the importance of integrity oversight and suspicious betting detection within the regulatory structure.
IBIA confirmed that its Global Monitoring & Alert Platform (MAP) will be used to monitor account-level betting data and assess unusual wagering patterns. When potentially suspicious activity is detected, alerts will be shared with the AGLC to connect market intelligence with broader sports integrity efforts.
The addition of IBIA to Alberta’s regulatory framework aligns the province with other jurisdictions that incorporate integrity monitoring directly into licensing requirements for sportsbook operators.
IBIA Strengthens North American Presence
IBIA’s approval in Alberta also expands its influence across North America, where it already operates in Ontario’s regulated market. According to IBIA’s 2026 Integrity Report, North America accounted for 20 percent of global integrity alerts, second only to Europe at 28 percent. Tennis and mixed martial arts led in integrity alerts within the region.
In the first quarter of 2026, IBIA identified 70 suspicious betting alerts across 10 sports globally. Football generated the largest number of alerts at 25, followed by tennis with 16 and esports with 15. The organization’s monitoring platform is designed to detect irregular betting behavior indicative of match-fixing, manipulation, or other integrity risks within regulated sports wagering.
Alberta’s approval of IBIA comes as Canadian provinces continue to refine online gambling oversight following the expansion of regulated sports betting markets. The July launch marks one of Canada’s most significant gaming expansions since Ontario’s online gambling market opened in 2022, and early integrity measures are expected to set a benchmark for future regulation.
