You need a script to validate the input on the server-side too as anyone can bypass the javascript validators (client-side).
PHP is nothing like a database, but a scripting language, and would be perfect to use for this.

Site is hacked. It's running on wordpress and use a few plugins (could be outdated) which is easy for anyone to check the source for and find vulnerabilities in.
That's my bet on how they got in without looking too close into it, also one of the reason I prefer to create my own solutions.
Sounds like your current host has a very bad solution if they only support a few of the top domain extensions.
I'd recommend (and use those myself) namecheap.com for handling your domains and hostwinds.com for hosting.
