What's better - promoting a small group of casinos or as many as possible?

Hi All,

Given the current climate in our industry and what seems to be players not depositing as much or being as loyal to just one or two casinos, I'm starting to wonder if I should start promoting more casinos.

Of course only reputable establishments but I see this as a way to cover more bases and hopefully produce more income.

As it is now I promote a handful of trusted MGS casino groups, 1 playtech (bet 365) and all rival properties (Black Diamond, Box24 and Spartan slots) under Affiliate Wide.

Most days I look at the payments block here at AGD and think hmmm would be nice to be getting a payment today. Instead I get payments AW,Rewards Affiliates & 32Red early in the month, then have to wait to mid to later month to get more payments.

My focus is on player security and fair gaming establishments so with that in mind...do you promote just handful or a wide selection of venues?

Cheers

:)

Hey Dave,

We promote a lot of casinos - but guess what - only a few programs actually convert worth a damn and pay. The trick is exactly what you say - a large group of reputable establishments.

If you come across this list, please PM it to me. :emoticon-0108-speec

Comes down to management. The worst part about large lists is when a casino goes bad, you lose all your SEO efforts, etc unless you have a good idea of what to do to that page to turn it into something that makes you money. The large lists take time to manage.

I think a "medium" size is the way to go

I like questions like this because it makes me go and look at my stats in a way I otherwise wouldn't have!

Since I became a webmaster I have promoted 269 different reputable casinos.
Of those, 65 earned $0 and another 59 earned less than $100 (Which means I haven't been paid by most as it's below the minimum).
But some of those where I earned over $100 I never got paid cos they closed down and did a runner with my cash; e.g. Klub 8, Better Casino, Lasseters and Casino Cubed... :(

In hindsight I think I promoted (and still do) too many casinos and that something around the 100 mark would be more sensible and efficient. Trouble is, I don't like dumping casinos who have done nothing wrong, even if they don't convert.

IMHO unless funds are being wired, these minimum payment thresholds are a joke. Granted the program pay a fee to the webwallet but hell if other aff programs can pay $50 min, so too can others.

Setting a payment threshold to $100 or $200 to a web wallet is ludicrous.

on the 59 KK has made money (say for argument sake) it's $50 per casino. A total of $2,950 earned (his money not the casinos). But he has to wait to make threshold payment. Or just drop their ass and let them walk away with his cash...

Seriously, it's nothing more than a scammy rort to screw affiliates out of their rightful earnings. It's like telling sub contractor...Too bad buddy we're not paying you because you didn't deliver enough box this week

I'm surprised you didn't get paid from Lasseters. Was it a lot you were owed? If so send me a PM I might be able to work some magic (remember I live in OZ).

Thanks for your input KK!

Thanks for the offer!
It was $275 and I was promoting them via Income Access who said, last time I communicated with them, that they were waiting to get the money from the casino's owners.
I'm not really bothered about it now - it was 2 full years ago and I "wrote it off" ages ago.

Re the payment thresholds; I didn't check each one (would take too long), but I know I deal with loads of programs where $100 is the minimum - some are only $50, while a few are $200! Of those 59 under $100, 37 are under $50, but some of the casinos are part of a larger group so I would have got that payment.
I usually request payment by Neteller, so small payments shouldn't be a problem, but I don't mind waiting for bigger amounts in most cases.

$275 is $275.
However it's not a biggy for you.

I prefer small number of good programs that own several properties. This way I can promote large number of casinos, and because of a small number of programs, payouts occur more often.

I've done both.

IMO, better to promote a few good ones than a bunch of rotten ones with a few good ones in the mix...

I will have to say though, I have fond memories of that thread over at the old CAP about identifying where payments came from... Used to get so many checks it was almost impossible to tell where they were all coming from.... Ahh the good old days... ;D

I think KasinoKing knows what he is talking about, I personally haven't seen anybody promote so many different Casinos so I think he is the most experienced! I respect how you wouldn't want to stop promoting a casino if they haven't done anything wrong!:D

I think it all depends on what you really want to offer on your site, If you have a little niche you want to promote then you should stick with that but it all depends on what you want to offer!;D

I was wondering why everyone promotes Casinos if they don't pay and run away with your money? It seems like not the best way to make money....maybe I am wrong but with poker CPAs at $100+, it seems like a no-brainer.

Well.... that $100CPA sounds good... but... for every average player I earn 3x that a month... for at least 3 months, with unlimited potential for more earnings. Not to mention the WHALES that come along every few months... Now thats a no brainer. ;)

If you only promote casinos that have a good reputation, you don't need to worry about getting paid.

There are many other means for providing content, don't weight yourself down with excessive baggage if that is your only reason for listing them.

I respect how you wouldn't want to stop promoting a casino if they haven't done anything wrong

That is a quality that deserves respect. However there comes a time when you should have acquired enough clicks sent to that casino where yes, conversion should definitely be looked at.

In shorter words, you should stop promoting a casino if they haven't done anything right because even if you have no problem with sending more and more clicks to what is amounted to a black hole, you still owe your sponsors who DO make you money, more respect than to list the worthless right next to the worthy (but that should be common business sense 101 anyway - you don't put the dust collectors where the high traffic spots are: you put the most profitable + fastest selling : because that is what will make you the most money, the fastest.

* And yes, Dave, always reputable. :) "Go quality an never be sorry" is as appropriate as "buy quality, and never be sorry".

....................

When you are considering dumping a sponsor: First, have you done any testing to check their tracking?

There's a reason they tell you when you're having trouble with getting something started, to first check to make sure there is petro in the tank, or to make sure the plug is actually plugged in.

These are the most common mistakes people make. So before you jump to assumptions first do the tedious homework that needs to be done. Once you have established the tracking is working (and by that i mean all the way thru to deposit, played and lost), and since you're testing anyway, use somebody with a different last name, area code, zip code etc , because think it out, if you were going to cheat someone, wouldn't it be smart to make sure that any signups which come thru from the same last name, same area code/zip code, show up in the stats?

that said, I believe if there is cheating going on these days, it is likely untagging players/cross promoting without giving aff credit : special attention given to whales.

Anyway once you establish the tracking is working (and that you aren't being cheated) then you can choose to work with the program to find some bonus scheme that will produce for you; or you can choose to let them sit because as noted, they haven't done anything wrong.

..

BUT, how do you know that if you haven't done the homework?

If you know your traffic pretty well then you ought to be able to almost guess which casinos are going to convert in that specific spot, and which will not; before you ever actually try them out.

So where i am going with that is when a casino doesn't produce the results you were expecting, why do you opt to choose to think that casino hasn't done anything wrong?

Me, I immediately think they probably ARE doing something wrong lol. (and testing has proven more than once, that I was right).

Just for clarity:
It was me who made that original comment; I and meant they haven't done anything wrong in they way they treat their players, not their affiliates.

You gave some excellent advice in your post though, and I am currently reviewing who I promote and am seriously considering dumping some of the best casinos purely because they are just a total waste of my time, of which I never have enough. :(

Actually, BB1webs has been saying that for close to ten years, referring to affs.

Works both ways though.

At first I didn't want to have many casinos listed but more listings gives me more content and reviews to produce.

However I can still prioritize where programs get more exposure.

If I am not happy with a program I can always send the traffic elsewhere.

I can always send the traffic elsewhere.

Oh, okay, we're on the same page. At first I thought you were saying that by having more casinos you were getting more content via a review page which would be true (and brings me to my next point)

But if you have a page bringing in traffic for Casino X and that casino isn't of quality I can tell you from painful, wasted time experience that it is VERY hard to ... well for instance i had done the same thing as I mentioned above, and had a page for a casino which was no good. I thought i could put up a warning and suggest a different casino / same software = games.

Did absolutely no good which is why I so vehemently disagreed with Mr C (of GPWA) when he chose to ask all others to not promote a casino which Casino City (his site) kept up a link. His rational was that they ran a disclaimer that popped up.

Well first of all, last time I checked almost everybody has a pop up blocker these days and second, I tried it with the disclaimer on the page, so the surfer was sure to see it, and it failed miserably.

..........

To Dave: ya I know I kinda combined several posts with your approach to ... I would guess life in general, but certainly towards only listing quality casinos. :)

We have less casinos on our sites with the highest player value and very careful who we place when whale sitings are a frequent occurence.I was just going to pull about 20 casinos last week as they only earn us $100-$300 a month then i looked at the numbers per year that would be pulling about $60,000 a year of income. So now we have been pruning the higher traffic pages of these low ballers but still keeping them on lower traffic pages just to get a player or 2 a month so we dont risk any inactivity crap.

If you rank for 'Online Casinos '(just example ) probably it would be good to put as many as you can there but have your best earners on top.We have to remember the reader they don't want to come and see only 10 casinos to choose from ,most of them want to see lots .Remember to check you links often ,I tried to upload new links every 3-4 months ,especially if you get special promos and the casinos remove the promo or landing page and forget to tell you!
