This is becoming a great thread and really appreciate the advice here guys, I know from my experience its often a patience game and making sure that you don't jump the gun in which some cases sites end up getting penalised. I'm just giving myself a cut off point or roadmap if you like to set some targets out that I should be achieving, 6 months, 12 months down the line. If the progression isn't being seen I think it soften better to just cut your losses and start over, can call it a learning experience

I've just launched a site 2 weeks ago and I've got some page one rankings for very low search volume terms however I don't get caught up in rankings and just focus on making my site as good as possible - look after the visitors and SEO should fall into place (apart from technical aspects).

Just want to add that the rankings may be the honeymoon period too - if you are curious the search term is Amaya Gaming Slots for the UK version of Google.

It's getting harder and harder to rank on google these days. With a decent number of links pointing to your site, it shouldn't take more than a few months.

I've read up quite a bit on the Google sandbox and the fact that Google doesn't allow websites to rank well in the initial stages of a site launch, particularly in the gambling niche. I guess this is why its so frustrating as the trust and quality factors play a massive role in getting to the top and on top of that - patience

I would say that its a waste of time these days to start an affiliate site.
Even the old and first affiliate sites are having a dificult time with googles algoritms changes and penalties.
Problems we all face are google's monoply and the affiliate programs that are changing deals wile they go.
I see a dark future for affiliates because of the constant takovers by criminal zionist companies and hackers.
If by any chance you get some grinders or high rollers then they seem to disapair as fast as they came.
Maybe the smart way to go is to start your own adroid/mobile casino.

I have found that once a site is dead, it is harder to bring it back to life, it is easier to start fresh and rank a new site then to clean up an old one.

It really depends on niche and quality of the website. If you have a good idea in an easy niche, by implementing it in a functional, graphic-appealing site, you can go viral through social networks, get authoritative links naturally and be sure your site will be ranked in short time. Different is in complicate niches like gambling, you need to have a good idea and make a perfect site to entertain visitors, entice them to explore the site deeply, pay attention to bounce rate and analytics parameters, work with geo-targeting and conversions, exclude rogue brands, be active in forums ..and so on. Do not expect easy/natural links, almost nobody will give you for free.

I've been doing a lot of testing recently and it looks like there is no specified time to rank a site. It all depends on the trust factor you can attain to show Google that you're not just another run of the mill spammy website. I'm guessing in less competitive niches, its a lot easier to rank in the first couple of months.

Many said that in 2006 as well. I mean about the gambling affiliate stuff, not the racist comment in the middle :)

I've seen some solid improvement in rankings when I shift my focus to adding value as opposed to rank checking. It comes in useful to engage how well your changes have been received but your focus should always be on the user and consider search engines.

There are also some pretty decent White Board Friday's from SEOMoz who offer better insights into how search algorithms work and certainly food for thought in relation to future updates.

There's a panda update coming soon, so quality now more than ever is really important. Google will eventually build these updates into the algorithm continuously so it'll leave little room for thin content sites. Give your site a content audit and make sure it's not at risk

It all depends on different criteria and link building but for me it takes 2-3 months to get in top 20 then take 1 months more to get in top 10.

4 months to get on page 1 is amazing ,i can hardly belief it

It all depends on the keyword or phrase. I highly doubt he's talking about reaching that with say "online casino" for example ;) It's not hard to rank for non-competitive phrases/keywords. But honestly ranking for the highly competitive phrases as "online casino" can be too generic.

The money phrases are the long tails. The more targeted the search results, the more likely of bagging players who want to signup and deposit!

Bit too late for that now.

agreed! I was on page 3 and moving up for 'online casinos' a while back.. Super excited about it, until I disappeared completely for the phrase. Site still ranks well, just not for that... The top 3 spots are what you want to aim for if you want to see good traffic (assuming the phrase gets some searches) Page 2 gets you almost nothing at all while everything under spot 3 on page 1 will get you a little of the leftovers lol

Thats been my experience with 'competitive phrases' anyway.

Such questions always foreshadow debates and disputes as it has not straight answers.. Read the other articles about SEO to understand the main principles and also you shuld understand that the search enginees are inert enogh so you can no predict how fast your optimization will bring results. The main principle - the faster+qualitative - the better)
