Hi Guys and Gals,

I need your opinion. what is a fair amount of time that a affiliate program should cookie your links. I was just told 24 hours by an affiliate manager, and I was shocked! I thought 30-60 days was the general rule. what are your thoughts on this? would you drop the program, with this little time frame.

Hei Rhondagrace

We have 30 days and I think most companies that use Income Access are pretty much the same, I think 24 hours is crazy but 90 day and forever it to much.

I voted 30-90.
Surprised to see some people voting for "Forever" - seems a bit short-sighted: How would you feel if a player had visited some crappy tin-pot website & clicked on a link but not signed up, then later visited your wonderful website, liked what they saw, clicked on YOUR link & signed-up but got tagged to the first affy's tag? :(

24 hours is totally unacceptable. Please Name & Shame!

Agree with KK. Though, I think 30 days is a good fit.
One thing to consider however, if the cookies are cleared this is a moot topic!

I put 14-30 as I think anything over 30 is a bit too much. I agree.... forever is nonsense. There is a reason this type of tracking is no longer in existence (forever cookies) and it relates a a little blackhat tactic called 'cookie stuffing'.

Agreed I could just do a pop under campaign for a few months and if the cookie was forever i would be loaded.

30 days makes 100% sense.

BoyleSports recently increased their cookie to 7 days. They used to have a session cookies, like PaddyPower still does. We should probably get a list of affiliate programs and add in how long each of their cookies last. Is there a way to test how long they last too?

Here is the BoyleSports email: Pretty lol how they admit that they were shafting affiliates and try to dress it up like they are doing them a favour now.

Improved Affiliate Cookie Window

We are now using persistent cookies in order to track referrals to our website from third party affiliate websites. Shifting from session cookie, these cookies now have a lifespan of 7 days. This will definitely improve our affiliate referral tracking.

I have no idea how long they last on general but I assume for maybe 95+% of users, if they are going to click thru and sign up, its going to be right away.

There were some numbers kicking around a while ago in a forum thread... can't remember what forum it was though or how they came up with them (could have been guesswork).

So take this with a pinch of salt but off the top of my head it was along the lines of a 50% reduction in signups for session v 30 days, and 25% less for one day v 30. Or something like that.

I NEVER knew Boyles and Paddy only had session cookies - that probably explains why I have had jack-squit sign-ups at them for the last several years!
Time to give them a huge boot up the ass!

Hi KK,

I'm waiting on a response back from me, telling them they need to change it. I'll let you know who they are, if they don't change it from 24 hours.

I thought the standard was 30 days? I remember 1 casino doing end of session tracking which saved them a lot of money!

A month is fair but anything that goes above that does not harm. I think it became a trend last year that some programs secretly lowered these time frames.

It would be great to get an overview for this in the certified programs section.

I would think that 30 days is a fair time frame, but that is only good if
the cookie lasts that long. I clean my browser at least once a week, which wipes
all of the cookies, temporary files, and anything else that is clogging up the computer.

I have never figured out how to get this information and THEN keep up to date with it :( I looked into spidering it awhile back but all the programmers I asked didn't seem to know how to do it.

I have to say from an operators perspective I would love to see a list of what others doing in terms of cookie length, a list of as many companies as possible would be great and I am sure some of the results would be shocking.
