Hello,

I am a small affiliate with a couple of small sites. However, one of my sites is experience a rapid, steady increase in traffic lately. In Nov '13 I had about 400 unique visitors per month and in Jan '14 I had more than 3,000 unique visitors per month. Hopefully I can raise those numbers even more (it looks promising, google likes my site, good ranking, lots of great content etc.).

I am currently hosting this site on shared webhosting, rather cheap but reliable.
As I said I am a small affiliate and never had far more than 3,000 visits per month (per website), so I do not know how much my hosting package can handle. ( I have a traffic limitation, but it is high enough for at least 10,000 visits AND I could upgrade to 100gb traffic/month for very small money.) Assuming my traffic keeps growing, when should I upgrade my hosting to virtual or dedicated server? Is it even necessary?
My site is running on wordpress + some plugins, nothing special.

Any advice is much appreciated. :)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it :) I would elect to go with a bandwidth increase for now. I hate messing with sites that are getting solid traffic. If you go VPS, check to see if your current hosting provider has it and can do it for you seemlessly. That's my advice anyway.

I agree with Guard Dog.. Sometimes (usually if not done properly) changing servers can affect rankings, it also increases the chances of something going wrong. One of my sites on shared hosting (godaddy) is getting around 5k unique visits a month.. No problems. Your hosting company will likely warn you (but keep an eye out anyway) when / if you start using to many resources. When you are at that point I would consider upgrading your plan or moving.. But while things are going good, ride it as long as you can!

Okay, I keep it that way (for now) and upgrade my traffic limit, if necessary. And yes, my hoster has virtual servers available which are not that expensive.

Thank you both! :)
