Strange Links

So here I am going through webmaster tools and notice I have a ton of new incoming links form various websites.

The thing is all the links that seem to be incoming are not to pages but to cloaked affiliate links :/ as an example someone is linking to wwx.trycasinogamesfree.com/4ss4 now this is my cloaked link for Bet At casino.

Can someone explain why they would be doing this? is it to destroy me? (they are wasting their time if it is, there is nothing to destroy lol)

Just seems strange that someone would use MY affiliate links, especially on so many sites.

Hope I made sense, cheers all.
Matt

i have had a similar situation. i am pretty sure it is an attempt at negative seo.

I submitted a reconsideration request and used the disavow tool. It seemed to work.

If I was you I would never rush to submit reconsideration request or use the disavow tool, better chill and wait for a while, the negative seo attack is up for the past 1 month many had received similar "gifts", we got for example a exact anchor links on top kws:) But this wont stop us.

Thank you @mikebuchan. I took my time to read about the correct way to do the re-consideration request & disavow tool such as emailing webmasters and putting it in the text file.

If I understand you correctly, It is better to wait and see how it effects my site becuase there could be a positive impact?

Just try to balance the bad seo and opposite it with the new stuff you do for your optimisation, you see Google are not that retarded - anyone can target you and spam out thousands of links and etc, I think Google track this so example if for 1 year you have done everything ok and then suddenly you get 100 links with crap - this is signal this is clear signal that you are not the one doing it, cause you could have done it way earlier:) My 5 cents on this negative SEO is that is pure fail, someone took his time to do it but really it is fail.

How badly did you get spammed? Just a couple hundred or thousands links may not really make a difference.

Also, it's weird that they would spam the links only to the cloaked affiliate links. As those are redirects, it may not harm your site that much.

You shouldn't do anything until you notice a negative effect in the rankings. Even then, disavowing may or may not work... Negative SEO is becoming a big problem these days.

I have yet to ever use the disavow tool. I have heard some people achieving successes with it, but as Mike said, it would be my very last resort.

Have you ever gotten hit with negative seo? One time I opened webmaster tools and looked at my links. I saw links like vigraforum.pl/blogpost1, vigraforum.pl/blogpost2, vigraforum.pl/blogpost3, and much more. They were all to the exact same site. Has anyone ever encountered this? If so, what was your technique to get rid of them?

All you can do is disavow them in webmaster tools and pray that they did'nt get indexed.

Some people say to only disavow the exact url, but I just do the whole domain. I am happy to share them with you as it took at least three full days to hunt these down, and manually check them.

Here is a list you can safely add to your disavow.txt file.

The format should look like that btw. A hashtag is not processed by the spider and are just notes. They advocate making notes and to try to get rid of the bad links by contracting the webmasters first.

I did not include those here as they are fine sites that just where linking to me in horrendous ways lol! These are all just trash domains.

Enjoy ;)

Whoa! Thank You! My disavow file did not look like that. There were sites in there that looked like social networking, is there a way to determine which links are helping or hurting?

I do not know which backlinks are "weighing down my site". The thing is I do some ppc, so I think some of those links are getting registered as backlinks becuase they are gambling related. I think that is a good thing, no? Anyone have any suggestions on how I can determine what backlinks are helping?

The most common way negative SEO is done nowadays is blog comment + forum profile spam, so that would be a start. Guestbook spam also. After that it get's a bit more difficult to judge as there are so many factors...

thank you, those are easier to identify than others like you said. I have links from other gambling sites that I have know idea where they came from. They are relevant to my site so I think I should keep them, but I am looking for a program that can analyse my backlinks and show which are helping and which are hurting.

On another forum I post on I've seen some people use a service/tool called "link detox" for this. Never tried it personally though, I'm not sure how reliable a program like that can be since google's algo is so complicated.

Are those relevant links you speak of in the content of the site? Is it duplicate content? What anchors are they using? How is the site's link profile?

cannot find my links, that is the strange thing about it. I have an inking that it is from the pay per click I was doing, perhaps the service i was using was placing ads on that site at a time and when google crawled it they registered my site as a backlink. That is my best answer.

The question is, what to do now? To Disavow or not to disavow?

Just to be clear, was your site already penalized?

Anyways, if I was you, I probably wouldn't disavow those relevant links yet, only do it if nothing else seems to work.

no it was not. I just have a feeling that there are some of these links that are holding my site from ranking where I want it. But it is just a feeling based on nothing. I know it takes a while to rank, I didnt expect to see so many of these links.

Yep in that case definitely keep the links and just focus on building more good ones.

PPC campaigns, from companies like Bidvertizer (shudders) or 7search (shudders more) can add a ton of low quality links to your
site. This is how that happens.

Most of the time, the landings for where they are hooking clicks go to forum looking doorway pages, with your competitions ads and yours, listing in the order of the top bidder. They are sometimes "nofollow" and therefore should not hurt you, but since they really don't care, many are followed.

I used this method to get sites indexed really fast before all thee animals came to play and I had not though about it much until you mentioned it now.

The way around this is to simply use a tactic where there is an off domain landing page, or redirect the links through a service with no 301
