Linking from a site you own to a site you own, good or bad?

What's the best way to link from one site say x.com to y.com if I own both sites?

They have different IPs and are hosted in separate accounts, however the whois is the same owner.

One is a 'non-trading individual' and the other a company but both have my name.

Just don't want to upset Google.

Any ideas?

I think, if this is only 2 sites, this is nothing to worry about.

I agree, if its just two sites its not going to be a problem.. Google doesn't want you to link a large network of sites together to sculpt PR (DA/PA whatever you want to call it.) In fact, if you have two similar sites, I think Google would expect them to share some links.

It also helps if they target different keywords..

For example: 'UK Online Casinos' and 'AU Online Casinos' I would say is fine...

'US Online Casinos' and 'USA Online Casinos' might be questionable.

In other words, as long as the sites have different content, you will be fine.

Yeah, that's right. If it's just two websites there is nothing to be worried about. Simply link from X site to Y site, it's okay.

IMHO if the sites are in the similar niche and is there a reason to show the visitors link to some kind of info on every page, why not use sitewide link?

I do this all the time, but don't create link wheels. Also only link if you are happy for the big G to know you own and run both sites!

I've got another approach - do it good for readers ;-)
If u have something what should majority readers see and can get value from that website, you can use sitewide if u want..

Even google links to it's other websites, if it's relevant shouldn't be a problem, I have never had a problem with it

no-follow links are good. I link back and forth using no-follows and sometimes follows. You should find a good ratio of follow/no-follow external links and backlinks that works for you. You are not passing link equity in theory but there is equity in no-follow links, in my opinion. Wikipedia links and social links like Pintrest, Facebook and Twitter are all no-follow and they have value.

I also have a link on a Wikipedia page to one of my websites. To be honest I don't notice that much of it, but it certainly wouldn't hurt

The days of worrying about "juice" flow, is akin to the days when we'd optimise our pages for the SE, and not people. Back then, you'd never dream of linking to another site, without getting something back in return. However these days, that mindset is outdated. I often link to authoritive sites with do follow links, as as long as the content is relivant. IMO quality content isn't just about what's on your site, but also what you link to

The general consensus seems to be that Google isn't checking Whois data.

So if that is true, if two sites are hosted on different servers (IPs), the Google doesn't know if the same person owns the two websites, and therefore the link will be just as valuable as any other from some other website.

But Whois privacy is a negative SEO signal.
