If your talking about the google adwords keyword tool you don't have to fill in the category. The only thing you need to enter is the 'Word or phrase' box and the captcha. Everything else is optional.

It is common advice to start with long tail keywords, and work your way up. For example: 'Keno online bonus codes' will have much less competition then 'keno online'.

google adwords keyword tool is best. all you need is enter the search term on the box. then you need to check the Broad or "Phrase", or [Exact] match case on left side. then you can click on search.

I would suggest you research your competitors and use SemRush to track on which keywords they rank then filter the volume on kws that is worth if you attention and decide what kws to go after. Google adwords is still the best source for keywords research though

You should use the keyword tools available from the search engines.

I use the Google Adwords tool, and I also use the keyword tool for Bing that
you can find within your Bing Webmaster Tools account, if you have one.

I do not keyword research.

I just write stuff that I find is compelling and then see what it ranks for naturally. I learned this by the terms people used on search to land on it from...... oh that's right G killed that completely.

???

Still a viable route, since the use of 2 and three word phrase search terms are going to end quite quickly. Yes people will be speaking thier sentance long questions to find your site because typing is totally a waste of time.

There is also Google Trends - Hot Searches to find Hot Searches is super fun ;D

I've noticed many webmasters that build a site and then ask how should they do keyword research
to find out what the site should rank for. The keyword research should be the first thing that they do.

The keyword research should be done before you even buy the domain or develop the web site.
You definitely want the domain name to center around the keywords that you are going to use, and
you should build the web site with categories and a URL structure that supports the keywords as well.

I agree with most of that ;) The last part about the domain - can be true. But you could go for a 'sticky' sounding name as well, like I did (or felt like I did at the time) with SlotsOnFire.com. Not many keywords in there.

I sort of agree with CBR.. As I have a good handful of sites that I just started building and went with what it would naturally rank best for. Or I set out to rank for one keyword, and it would rank naturally for a completely different one.

I would say settling on a few keywords can make it harder to achieve your goal and may limit you. I would recommend more of a site 'theme' when starting out and take it from there. IE if your site is about online slots, accordingly pick a relating domain name, then write about everything under the sun about online slots then study how ppl find you.

I admittedly spend more time 'doing' and little time 'planning'.. I could be more balanced, but still better then spending a lot of time planning and little time doing.

The google trending page can be very useful! I looked at the page for a few seconds and already have ideas for articles.

I guess this is kind of like what is trending on twitter but combined with google news that has an affect on your ranking because there will be a lot more queries about what is trending?

I read that the google trending tool is not really accurate and might be outdated. I know it sounds stupid... but thats what I read in one of the SEO / marketing articles... Can anyone confirm?

It doesnt sound stupid. It is either guest blogging or submitting press releases.

Guest blogging is when a webmaster gives their article to another websites to use for their site in exchange for a link pointing back at their site.

Another way of marketing articles is doing press releases. This is a good way to get a website exposure, and can help with serps.

Seo's abuse both of these techniques, and they should be done carefully. When I say carefully I mean keeping the topic relavent to both webmasters sites in guest blogging and not have too many links with a person anchor text in them.

As far as google trends, it may be outdated. I just read about it on another thread and an article caught my eye that I thought would be helpful for me.

Press releases are older than Google and will exist after Google, but I would not do links in there I think just mention is ok

I agree to a point with @mikebuchannen. Seo press released are using a lot in blackhat seo and are known as spam in a lot of cases.

On the flip side of things you could find one or two press release sites, and do the release without your link in it. It could say your site name such as myurl.com without a link.

IMO if you do that one quality sites you can get the word out to people and get direct business.

Google Adwords is the best for keywords research tool. You just need to sign up into this tool and go to the keywords planner option after that put some keywords which are related to your services then you'll find the more keywords suggestion from there. You can choose those keywords which have low competition and high volume searches.

Thanks
Mike
