I have been trying to increase the speed of my site recently. It take 3.7 seconds to load according to GTMETRIX. The main issue is my images are too big and the dimensions are not specified. I installed the Yahoo Smush It plugin, has anyone had any success from Yahoo Smush It?

I used to worry about shaving load time but unless it is noticeable to the user I don't bother anymore. I don't really think its a metric that has much weight for Google, and with increased internet speeds its not really an issue like it used to be. That said, if you really want to fine tune your site anyway, loading the images from a CDN may be a little more effective?

I did it for my site, slotsonfire.com. Mainly because I was using 800x600 images for casino graphics (slots) and the load time was pretty slow due to having a lot of images for each slot. I had those images automatically shaved down in the backend to increase load time. Helped significantly for people not bouncing directly off the pages waiting for images to load.

I do it the old fashion way with all my images. Coming from a time when dial-up was the norm, you focused on reducing Kb and still maintaining reasonable image clarity. It's also a good idea to know what ext (jpg, png, gif) is best for each image type.

This alone can dramatically reduce Kb size ;)

Maybe the Google speed matrix isn't a huge factor BUT if your site is not fully loaded these days in 5 sec or less (what with broadband and what not), the rise in bounce rates from people hitting the back button, does climb rapidly after the 5 sec mark.

There is Snagit editor that is a part of a program called Snagit that I use to
edit or compress images. It's one of the best for simple image editing and
compressing. It's not going to work wonders like Photoshop, but I've been
using it for years when I need to fix images on any of our web sites.
