Nice looking site Andy. Clean and simple. I noticed that the "VIP Programs" tab doesn't light up like the others do (JFYI)... when you're on that page, the Home page tab is still lit up. .........

I know.. I never fixed thatIt was a pain in the butt creating that type of tabbing for Wordpress. I am not a template designer and it took me awhile to get it into the state that it is in. I'll leave it, but need to generate some content for that website at some point. Haven't updated it in about 2 years.
Another huge fan of Wordpress here.
I'm also a fan of Headspace and I use these additional plugins that haven't yet been mentioned.
Pretty Link : for link cloaking
Wordpress Super Cache : for faster user access
WP DB Backup: Er, for backing up the database
I was researching into this topic and i read some articles where people say that if the individual who creates the wordpress theme doesn't do it correctly, that can affect your SEO and ranking/crawling on search engines like Google.

Thats true, if they have done it from scratch (not modified template) thought even templates can be wrong.
But like mentioned Headspace and All-in-one seo, they add the functionaility of Meta tags, etc and make the posts and pages more friendly. Always good to have friendly urls too.

It's definitely possible to screw up SEO if you create your own template. However, if you are capable of creating a WP template - you probably have the skills to properly set up the H tags to keep it friendly.
Most of the rest: Meta Tags, Title Tags, etc... can be manipulated with All in One SEO, Headspace, and others.
For a basic website, HTML can always be used, but I still use Dreamweaver. Wordpress has certainly come a long way with enhanced features.
