To be honest I never linked to the direct download, maybe because I would hate to arrive on a page and a download starts to happen without me doing anything.
So usually I link to the homepage or a specific landing page.

Depends on the situation but I try to stay away from the direct downloads also. I myself get warning flags and would never do a direct download until I can read and see what is going on.
