Hello again,
I like the idea of using afew popups but actually dont like them myself, has anyone had much success with them?
never used them and never would, hate them when they appear and click off them ASAP, Im sure most people are the same, infact they make me wary of the site im using in case it spread virus or adware etc
I haven't used popups because people generally hate them, but I did have a site where an information box appeared when people hovered their mouse cursor over various parts - I thought they would appreciate being able to read more information, and as soon as they moved their mouse cursor away the information box disappeared. So it was unobtrusive and helpful. It wasn't blocked by browser software because it wasn't an old-fashioned popup, it was a javascript 'hover' action.
Then I did a survey of people visiting my sites, and people said they hated popups - even like my unobtrusive version. People really hate stuff popping up!
OMG, what I hate even more is a sidebar that "follows" as you scroll up and down a page
I can't stand that! I leave as fast as I got there, those are so annoying and I can't click it off. bad bad bad... lol![]()

No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.
I actually like static sidebars, they can be useful... but I have to phase them out too, that's another thing my survey of site visitors showed was not liked in general...
What I can't stand is animated banners, THAT will get me to leave any site immediately - how can you read the information on a page when there's things flashing everywhere!
Hey Jam, woud you share with us the other results of your survey as well? Might be interesting to hear what else actual visitors hate..
Like everyone else, I've never used them because I hate them myself. However, I do remember a case study that talked about how effective they are for adding subscribers.
Something I have been considering are exit pop ups. The visitor is leaving your site anyway, it might be worth trying to make one more attempt at conversion or adding them as a subscriber.
Most of the survey was specifically about visitor reactions to my own sites so may not apply to other sites, but there were some general ideas :
The whole site design should look professional. People's expectations are higher than in the past, I guess because in general people have more experience on the internet and have seen so many good-looking sites that they no longer trust sites that look 'amateur'. Of course there are always exceptions, and recently in another post here at AGD there was some talk about 'ugly' sites still converting, but my survey definitely indicated that people are not easily impressed these days.
Also related to the above point, the site shouldn't be too colorful. People don't want the site to look like a circusThere was a surprisingly large number of people commenting on 'too much color'.
People also indicated that bonus information is not the most important thing, they want to know more information like for example whether sites are reliable or not, and only then are they interested in the bonus. Of course there are still plenty of people very interested in bonuses, but they're probably not the ideal target market since they're not going to convert to regular players.
There was a general impression that casino ads and bonus offers look 'cheap', untrustworthy or 'like a scam site'. People compared the content to scam ideas like 'lose weight now' and 'make money fast', they didn't have much confidence in the content.
So overall I guess webmasters need to make sure their designs are professional and give a sense of being reliable, not so much 'get bonus cash now!'
Thanks for the insight!
I'm definitely guilty with the 'get bonus cash now!' approachWill need more quality content to show authority
